Lovely is Your Dwelling - new cantata to be premiered on October 26

14 Oct 2014

On Sunday the 26th of October at 6:00 p.m. a new cantata by Jörgen Dafgård will be premiered in the church of Hässleholm. Ljuvlig är din boning or Lovely is Your Dwelling is the title and also the beginning of Psalm 84 from the Book of Psalms, where the lyrics is from. The town of Hässleholm has commissioned the work for the centennial celebration of both the town and the church. Lovely is Your Dwelling is the first first work ever written for the town.

This summer a 25 minute work for choir, soloists and ensemble has gradually taken shape. In it three forceful choir movements alternate with two softly lyrical sections focused around solo voices. Psalm 84 was suitable to set to music for this occasion, according to Dafgård. It is about longing for the house of God, which can also stand for the town as a place to return to. It alternates between forcefully extrovert and tenderly wistful sections in a way that was congenial to set to music in a composition with dramatically contrasting sections.

The work will be premiered by Hässleholms Kyrkas Vocalensemble (the Vocal Ensemble of the Church of Hässleholm) together with vocal soloists, flute, string quartet and organ, all under the direction of Birgitta Roslund. Here is more information and here a link for tickets.
